What is a house manager / butler's role?

In today’s society, the role of the butler has changed to encompass a more general house manager role.

The house manager is expected to be flexible, on call at most hours, be able to multitask and often need to be prepared to travel with their employer on short notice.

House managers are responsible for, amongst other things, hiring and dismissing staff, arranging events, overseeing travel plans and occasional chauffeur duties. They are also knowledgeable in fine wines. If working in a country residence, a house manager needs to have knowledge of shoots, gun care and experience in arranging shooting weekends.

Availability

The house manager’s schedule will vary significantly by household, and can include being on call 24/7, but will typically involve working at least 5 days per week (10-12 hours per day).

Salary expectations

Salaries will start at £50,000 gross per annum but will increase depending on duties and working hours.
